Domain Registration Services

Overview

howard.org now provide domain registration services to its members for 20 or so major top level domains including .com, .net and .org. howard.org can also transfer domains from other registrars to our system.

howard.org is able to do this as a participant in Tucows domain reseller program, sometimes called the Open Shared Registration System or OpenSRS, allowing us to extend domain registration services to our members at wholesale pricing.

howard.org will charge in the neighborhood of $11/year for domain registrations with no minimum number of years to buy. howard.org pays about $6 of that directly to Tucows, the remainder going to help defray the operational overhead for running the howard.org servers. The yearly fee may be adjusted from time to time as ICANN raise or lower the upstream charge for a domain.

For this annual fee, you get a domain name, DNS service and the ability to edit and manage your domain via a web interface.

You may also transfer domains from any other registrar for $11.  Any remaining years you have with the originating registrar are credited to your domain and you receive an additional year.

For those members who enjoy collecting domains as a hobby, please contact us.  We may be able to adjust the support portion of the fee depending on the number of domains you intend to transfer or register.

If all this has you chomping at the bit, read on.

Getting started

howard.org will provide a web-based form for starting the registration or transfer process for your domain.  This allows our system collection the basic information necessary to proceed with a registration or transfer.

At this point in the process, it is important to note...

If registering a new domain, your domain has not yet been reserved nor registration formally initiated.  You will receive email confirmation that our system is aware of your request but no further action will take place until you complete a few more steps described below - most notably, the paperwork.

If transfering a domain, an email containing a unique URL has been sent to the current administrative contact of the domain and must be visited in order to approve the transfer. If you do not have access to the email account listed for the current administrative contact, you will have to update it before attempting a transfer.  And of course there is still that pesky paperwork...

Paperwork

First, review the ICANN Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP). This document describes the policies currently in place affecting disputes that may arise over your ownership of a domain name.

Next, please read, complete and sign the Master Contract: Exhibit A, top level domain registration agreement and mail it to us. You are entering into a legally binding contract with howard.org and tucows.com and it has to be documented. Collecting legally binding contracts via web forms is difficult. howard.org is avoiding those headaches by resorting to old-fashioned paper. Please only post the pages with information you've provided or pages you've signed.

Payment

At this point you owe howard.org $11 multiplied by the number of years you wish the domain to be active. There is no minimum, and you will receive notice when your domain is about to expire. Extending ownership of your domain is as simple as sending us more money.

Please send mail to hostmaster@howard.org for details on how and where to send payment along with your registration agreement.
